J. McLaughlin Origins

Because you may want to know more about J.McLaughlin, here’s the story. The company was founded in 1977 by brothers Jay and Kevin with a mission to create a new American sportswear brand that offers two key components; classic clothes with current relevance and a retail environment with a neighborhood feel. So the first J.McLaughlin was more than just a clothing shop, it was the kind of place where people liked to hang out with its welcoming, faded-paint, cozy chair feel.

Today, J. McLaughlin has over 140 retail stores in the United States. True to the brothers’ vision, each store is entirely unique, attentively-designed to reflect each town’s color, character, and architecture. Most importantly, this attention to detail extends to exemplary customer service and local philanthropic engagement.

J. McLaughlin was designed in Brooklyn. And it’s family values that helped launch J.McLaughlin. But Kevin and Jay’s success also includes their vision and impeccable timing. Thirty years before Brooklyn’s current renaissance, Jay was buying and renovating old Park Slop brownstones. The proceeds from the real estate ventures financed the birth of the J. McLaughlin brand. Both New York born and educated, the brothers sensed that their formula for imbuing old school style with fresh relevance would translate into retail triumph. And it did! Now we have American fashion at it’s finest.
